Beginning in Melbourne, Australia
My Life So Far
In 1966, I began my journey in the vibrant city of Melbourne Australia, a place I was proud to call home for my first decade. My family was my foundation – my sister, now a gifted architect and chef, my mother, the nurturing heart, artist and dedicated primary school teacher, my father, a skilled musician, copywriter and builder.
Melbourne was alive with multicultural vibrancy, the joy of cousins, and the loving presence of my nana. The awe of watching humans step onto the moon on our beloved black-and-white TV made life feel extraordinary.
Family move from Melbourne to Queensland
Embracing a fresh start and new opportunities.
The year 1976 marked a pivotal moment as we relocated to a peaceful coastal town in Queensland—a sharp contrast to the lively urban environment I had known. The shift away from city life felt dramatic, but my parents passion for motorcycles over any traditional sports soon rubbed off on me, and I got my own bike…….thanks to Mum and Dad!
Motorcycle racing became my consuming passion, offering me a taste of freedom, speed, and exhilarating competition. When a new motorcycle shop opened up in town, I saw an opportunity and became an apprentice mechanic. My reasoning was simple: building, racing, and fixing motorcycles could give me an edge. After a few years, I shifted my focus from dirt tracks to road tracks, where the speed and adrenaline took the excitement to a whole new level.
Roaming the World in search of Wonder
Countries Visited:
New Zealand, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Japan, Malaysia, China, Philippines, Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, Turkey, Israel, Jordan, Qatar, Egypt, Austria, Slovenia, Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Isle of Man, England, Ireland, Switzerland, Belgium, USA, Canada
However by 1990, life took me down a different route, with new distractions – travel, the allure of parties, and the joy of falling in love. Being young influenced some of my decisions and not all were for my own good, things started to change, motorcycle racing started to pose financial challenges, so I shifted my focus, seeking the same sense of fulfillment by traveling and immersing myself in diverse cultures around the world.
For a decade, I took on multiple jobs – from mechanic and courier to taxi driver, laborer, waiter, dishwasher, and kitchen hand – whatever it took to save up for the adventures that beckoned. Traveling the globe began filling my yearning for pure freedom and for a long time, it did.
In 1997, I had an epiphany that being a mechanic wasn’t my ultimate passion. Nevertheless, the skills I had acquired proved to be invaluable! They instilled in me a knack for problem-solving and a deep well of creativity. Forever searching, I ventured into creating a portable limousine “minibar,” which, despite its failure due to stringent drinking laws in Australia, taught me vital lessons in perseverance and commitment to my dream of work-life freedom.
Transitioning from Melbourne to Cambodia.
A journey of connection and purpose unfolds.
On my travels something shifted and by 2014, something profound transpired during my time in Cambodia. My girlfriend worked for an NGO, and I had the time and resources to join her.
Forming new friendships abroad, I met a fellow Australian expat & humanitarian, Ian Jones. Ian is the founder of an NGO called “Agile Development Group” who imagined the brilliant idea to retrofit a tuk tuk to accommodate wheelchairs. Leveraging my mechanical skills, we formed a team with local expertise and undertook the transformation and hence, the “Mobilituk” was born.
This undertaking opened doors to bigger projects, like customizing vans for mobile health clinics aimed at supporting the disability community in Cambodia’s rural areas. This transformative experience was humbling.

Return to Sydney from Cambodia.
…carrying memories and meaningful experiences.
Returning to Australia in 2017, I resumed my role as a mechanic, but my heart remained tethered to Southeast Asia. I had a strong desire to contribute from afar once I had the skills. In late 2019 I discovered this extraordinary platform and dived in headfirst.
I saw a new path unfold—one that could bridge my life in Australia with my love for Southeast Asia. As I mastered the basics, I realized these skills could help me create geographical, time, and financial freedom while also embracing and supporting the disability sector in Cambodia.
